Saxophone Player and Leader of Phoenix Rising Jazz

With over 18 years of show-stopping performances and hailing from the vibrant musical scene of Missouri City, TX, saxophone virtuosos W. J. Walker has shared the stage with musical legends such as Earnest Pugh, the late Albertina Walker, and international Jazz sensation Dominique Hammons.

At the heart of the sonic revolution is Phoenix Rising Jazz, an ensemble curated by Walker that comprises some of the most exceptional talents in Houston and its surroundings. Originally born in Dallas in 2013, the band underwent a spectacular rebirth when fate brought Walker to Houston in 2015. In 2018, the dynamic trio of Walker, keyboardist Edwin Brown, and percussionist Arty Whittenburg ignited a musical spark that would blaze a trail. By 2019, bassist Ric Lominy joined the ranks, and today, Phoenix Rising Jazz has expanded to include up to seven members, featuring the soulful addition of a vocalist.

Inspired by the mythical phoenix, PRJ sees jazz as an immortal art form, rising again and again through generations. As trends come and go, bands break up, and founders become ancestors, jazz remains eternal, a force that keeps coming back to life.
